The next morning I met Danny outside the cheap rooms before 8, and on the way to the mall I told him everything Marco had said about Miko—the borrowed laptop, the form, and the brown envelope.
Danny listened with his hands tight on the steering wheel and didn't interrupt once.
At Gold's, he went into the men's changing room for me, because there was no version of that morning where I could walk in there myself.
And two minutes later he came out with the envelope behind his back, like a kid who had stolen something.
Locker 14, old running shoes, brown envelope.
It was all exactly where Marco said.
Inside were printed chats, screenshots, a copy of the endorsement form, and a client document with a real signature still visible next to the one that was supposed to be Marco's.
There was also a small USB drive with copies of the same files.
We didn't open it on the street.
We took everything straight to attorney Liza Salazar's office on Taft Avenue, and she spread the papers across her desk and went very quiet.
She said the signatures needed checking properly, that she wanted to keep the originals, and that there was a possible witness she could call.
Over the next three days, she contacted the investigators, gave them the materials and pushed them to look at Rico and at the form.
I kept waiting for a big moment, some official apology in a bright room, but it didn't come like that.
On the fourth day after I landed, the lawyer called me and said Marco would be released, because there were no longer enough grounds to keep holding him, though the investigation itself was still open.
I stood in the street with the phone against my ear and felt my knees go weak.
Marco was free, and he wanted to see me.
We agreed to meet in the park by Manila Bay late that afternoon.
Marco?
Over here.
By the railing.
Anna.
God, you're real.
I'm real.
You're real, too.
You're out.
I'm out.
For now.
They said released, not cleared.
The case is still open.
I know.
Liza told me.
But you're not in that room anymore.
That's what matters today.
When they took me, I kept thinking, she's coming, and she has that key.
I thought they would stop you at the gym or at the lawyer office I thought I had made you part of it I was careful Danny was careful We didn open the envelope on the street We took it straight to Taft Avenue Danny went into the men's changing room?
He did.
He came out with the envelope behind his back like a child stealing candy.
His hands were shaking.
I owe him.
I owe him more than I can say.
He knows.
He said you complained for an hour and then do the right thing.
That's fair.
That's very fair.
He also said his name was written down during the search.
He was scared, Marco.
Really scared.
But he still came with me.
I know.
I'll thank him properly.
Not today.
Today I think I would cry on him and he would never let me forget it.
That's probably true.
Was it all there?
The chats?
The form?
Yes.
The printed chats, the screenshots, the client document with the real signature next to the one they say is yours.
There was a small USB, too, with copies.
I forgot about the USB.
I put it in at the last minute and I thought I was being crazy.
You were being prepared.
There's a difference.
Liza looked at it?
She spread everything across her desk and went very quiet.
She said the signatures need checking properly.
She kept the originals.
Quiet is good?
Quiet from a lawyer is not bad.
It means she's thinking.
At least that's what I told myself.
And Rico?
Did she say anything about Rico?
She didn't say his name yet.
She said there was a possible witness and that she would contact the investigators.
She was careful with her words.
She said the case is not over.
I know it's not over.
I feel like it will never be over.
Four days, Anna.
It felt like a month.
For me, too.
I saw the airport, a police bench, a visitation room, and a lawyer's office.
That's my Manila so far.
I'm sorry.
Don't be sorry for the city.
Be sorry for the form.
The city didn't do anything.
I'm sorry for the form.
I'm sorry for the laptop.
I'm sorry for saying yes when Rico asked and not asking one question.
You trusted your trainer.
That's not a crime.
Maybe not, but it was stupid.
It was a little stupid.
A little?
Okay, it was very stupid.
But you didn't plan a scam.
You didn't take money from people who needed jobs.
You signed a page you didn't read.
That's not the same thing.
I keep hearing that in my head, not the same thing.
But I still spent the 4,000 pesos.
I know.
And you'll deal with that.
With Liza, with the case, with whatever comes next.
But not today.
You sound like Danny.
I'll take that as a compliment.
You should.
He's the best person I know.
He's outside somewhere, by the way.
He said he would wait near the road in case you needed anything.
But he didn't want to stand here and watch us talk.
That's Danny.
He gives you space and then worries about the space.
He said you would say something like that Did he tell you to take care of me He told me to make sure you eat something He said you would forget He not wrong So we eat After the sunset.
I've been in this city four days and I haven't seen the bay.
Then look, it's right there.
I see it.
It's doing something ridiculous with the light.
That's Manila.
It always does too much.
I like it.
I think I might like it here.
You haven't seen the traffic yet.
I've seen the traffic.
Danny drove me through it.
I have opinions.
Everyone has opinions about EDSA.
My opinion is that it's not a road.
It's a lifestyle.
Now you sound like a local.
Don't say that yet.
I still feel like a tourist with a police station map.
Anna, what you did, going to the gym, the lawyer, sitting in that station, you didn't have to.
I know.
You could have gone.
You had a ticket, a plan.
You could have left me a message and gone to Palau.
I thought about it for maybe five seconds.
Then I remembered you crying at that dog video.
I couldn't leave.
That dog was very brave.
He was.
So were you a little.
I didn't feel brave.
I felt like a boy in a room with too many men and one light that never went off.
I'm not going to pretend I know what that was like.
Good.
Don't.
I don't want to explain it again today.
Then don't.
We can sit here and look at the bay and be quiet.
I'm good at quiet.
I've had four days of practice.
You were scared too.
Yes.
In the station, I kept my mouth shut because Danny told me to, but I wanted to scream at the clerk.
I wanted to say he's a person, not a file.
I'm glad you didn't scream.
Me too.
I have a healthy fear of police stations now.
I have a healthy fear of everything.
That will get better.
Maybe not today.
but it will.
You don't know that.
No, but I know you're out, and Liza has the papers, and the case is still open, but you're not in a cell.
That's enough today.
Enough for today.
I'm going to stay a few days.
Not because I'm being noble.
Because I'm tired.
My body thinks it's still on a night bus.
You can have my room.
I'll take the sofa.
I'll complain about it for a week.
That's what Danny said you planned.
Danny talks too much.
He talks enough.
He also said you would offer me your room and then complain.
I hate that he knows me.
He's your friend.
That's the job.
What about your trip?
You were going to keep moving.
I will, just not tomorrow.
I need a bed that isn't moving and food that isn't from a machine and maybe one day where nobody says the word estafa.
You can give me two days, maybe three.
Then I'll take them.
Let me show you the real Manila.
Not the station, not the lawyer's office.
Food first, then the old city, the church, the bay at sunset No handcuffs No handcuffs is a strong selling point I can also promise mangoes Cheap mangoes Now you talking There a place near here It not fancy Plastic chairs loud music the best grilled fish I know Good.
I don't want fancy.
I want a chair and food that isn't crackers.
You ate crackers?
The Danny fed me crackers from a machine.
I'm basically a pigeon now.
That sounds like Danny.
He was worried.
He kept saying we should not spend money in the dark.
Then he bought me crackers.
It was very practical and very sad.
I'll buy you a proper dinner.
It's the least I can do.
You have no wallet.
They took it.
I have some money at home, in a drawer.
Then I'll let you pay, but only because it's important to you.
It is.
And tomorrow, I want to see something old.
A church, a wall, something that was here before all of us.
Into Maria's.
We can walk there, if you don't mind the heat.
I've been in Asia for months.
I don't mind the heat.
I mind the police.
No police tomorrow.
You can't promise that.
No, but I can promise I'll keep us away from them.
That's a better promise.
A realistic one.
Anna, thank you.
I know I said it.
I'll keep saying it until it's less strange.
Then say it once more, and then tell me where to get good food, because I'm hungry and the sun is almost gone.
Thank you, really.
For the key, for the lawyer, for not believing I did it.
I didn't know if you did it.
I believed you.
There's a difference.
You did?
I believed you because I know you, and because you cry at dog videos, and because you were too scared to lie well.
That's a strange compliment.
It's the best I have.
I'll take it.
Good.
Now feed me, Marco, before I start eating the railing.
There's a place two streets back.
Come on.
Slowly.
I'm still not used to walking outside.
Then we'll walk slowly.
We have time.
Tomorrow.
Real Manila.
Tomorrow.
But first, sunset.
I'm not moving until the sun is gone.
It's the first thing I've seen in this city that didn't ask me for a document.
Then we'll watch it, and then we'll eat, and then you'll sleep in a real bed.
That sounds almost like a holiday.
It's a start.
It's a good start.
Look, the sky is turning orange.
I see it.
It's almost showing off.
That's Manila.
It always does too much.
I think I might like it here.
Give it a few days, then decide.
Deal.
A few days, then I decide.
And then?
And then I go back to being a tourist, but a tourist who knows where the police station is.
That's not funny.
It's a little funny.
It's a little funny.

Sokakta telefonu
kulağıma dayamış halde durdum ve dizlerimin bağı çözüldüğünü hissettim. Marco özgürdü ve beni görmek istiyordu.
O öğleden sonra Manila Körfezi kıyısındaki parkta buluşmaya karar verdik.
Marco? Buradan. Korkuluk kenarına.
Anna. Tanrım, gerçeksin.
Gerçeğim. Sen de gerçeksin. Dışarıdasın.
Dışarıdayım. Şimdilik. Serbest bırakıldı dediler, aklandı demediler. Dava hâlâ açık.
Biliyorum. Liza söyledi. Ama artık o odada değilsin. Bugün önemli olan bu.
Beni aldıklarında, sürekli o geliyor ve anahtar onda diye düşündüm. Seni spor salonunda
ya da avukatın ofisinde durdururlar sandım seni işin parçası yaptım sandım dikkatliydim Danny dikkatliydi zarfı sokakta açmadık doğruca Taft Avenue'a götürdük Danny erkeklerin
soyunma odasına girdi? Girdi. Zarfı arkasına saklamış halde çıktı, şeker
çalan bir çocuk gibi. Elleri titriyordu. Ona borçluyum. Anlatamayacağım kadar çok borçluyum. Biliyor.
O zaman bak, tam orada.
Görüyorum.
Işıkla gülünç bir şey yapıyor.
Bu Manila.
Her zaman fazlasını yapar.
Danny bana makineden kraker yedirdi.
Intramuros'a.
Sıcaklık sorun değilse yürüyebiliriz.
Aylardır Asya'dayım.
Sıcaklık sorun değil. Polis sorun.
Yarın polis yok.
Bunu vaat edemezsin.
Her zaman fazlasını yapar.
Biraz komik.
Biraz komik.
